Integrity Begins with Us: A PSA Against Corruption

INTRODUCTION

Corruption is frequently spoken about as a system, political issue or intricate social issue. However, in practice, corruption starts with small matters the small decisions that gradually undermine sincerity, justice, and confidence in society. In the case of our Public Service Announcement (PSA), our group wanted to deliver this message in an innovating creative and effective manner. Rather than providing facts or figures we posed a very strong question and that is "What if corruption was a person?"

The reason why we selected this idea is that, personification of corruption enables people to perceive corruption not as an invisible problem, but as a living organism that thrives further when individuals commit unethical acts. Having made corruption assume a human shape, we bring out the fact of how it thrives on greed, silence and dishonesty but loses its strength when the individual decides to be upright. This approach also helps viewers understand that corruption is not something that exists only in government offices or large institutions. It exists around us, and it survives only when people allow it to.

Our PSA is dramatic and it stresses on the gravity of the problem. We demonstrate the process of corruption by means of narration and character depiction, we present the story of its life cycle the way it starts with little unethical deeds, how it gains strength when people are involved in bribery, and how it falls when people finally say No. This is an emotional and symbolic form of style that is meant to create an impact on the audiences.

Our key point in PSA is very straightforward:

“Integrity starts with you. Say no to corruption.”

In this project, we want to encourage students, youth as well as the general community to consider their personal decision and actively counter corruption in daily life.

PRODUCTION PROCESS

The development of our PSA, What if Corruption Was a Person, was developed following a methodological development that involved organization, innovation, collaboration, and development. We had a desire to deliver a powerful and dramatic message about the relevance of integrity, and all the production phases were thought out.

1. Planning and Brainstorming

Our project started with brainstorming about the various concepts of how to carry out the theme of anti-corruption. Our group settled on corruption personification as an alive person after considering a number of options. This idea enabled us to provide a powerful emotional impact and at the same time make the video interesting. We divided the roles into scriptwriter, director, actor, editor, narrator and designer so that each one of us was active.

2. Research and Script Development

In order to make a clear story line we conducted research on the impact of corruption on the society and how integrity can reverse it. Based on this information, we created a script, which demonstrated the life cycles of corruption its beginning with small unethical behaviours, its development with bribery and power abuse, and the end when people decide to be honest. Our script had several versions until we got the desired dramatic nature.

3. Filming

We chose the simple indoor and outdoor scenes to help the dramatic nature of the video. To make sure that the lighting, clarity, and emotional delivery were adequate, every scene was captured on several occasions. The non-acting team members were involved in camera work, props, background set up and directing the scenes.

4. Editing and post-production

When the filming was done, the clips were intertwined by the editor with transitions, background music, subtitles, and voiceovers. The guidelines were observed by including the subtitles to facilitate clarity. The most time-consuming stage was the editing as we wanted to get a good flow and visual impression and work within the limited 3-5 minutes.

5. Final Review and Upload

The group watched the final video together, and made minor adjustments and accepted it to be uploaded. Our awareness campaign was to then share the PSA on the YouTube and participate on the social media.

Not only did this process of production enhance further our knowledge of integrity, but also our teamwork, creativity and communication skills.

VIDEO SUMMARY

WHAT IF CORRUPTION WAS A PERSON - A Short Film | PSA

The PSA begins with a tense pursuit in which a shadowy figure is lurking in a dark place. This character is disclosed by means of Mr. Corruption who makes a video in which he recalls his life realizing that he has not much time to live.

He goes through his birth stage where he states that he was born when an individual offered a person bribe to a government official to get a process hastened, as a way of corruption beginning with little unethical actions. During his childhood, he diffuses into different areas such as in the education field where a student is accepted into an engineering college without merit leaving behind scholarship students and illustrating inequality.

Mr. Corruption is at his top during his youth stage when he is surrounded by powerful ministers and businessmen hence illustrating the extent to which corruption can penetrate institutions. He states that things appeared to be going his way and hence made him look invincible.

The plot undergoes a twist as individuals start to oppress him. The video goes back to the beginning of the chase, which is the seeking of the integrity by the people. Mr. Corruption understands that his life lies with the decisions of people, when people are honest and do not lie, corruption lacks power.

The PSA ends with the powerful call to action: What will you choose? Personification of corruption, dramatic narration and visual symbolism enable the video to send a strong message corruption succeeds where it is condoned but it can be beaten by personal and group ethical decisions.

SOCIAL MEDIA CAMPAIGN

In order to increase the scope of our PSA and make people aware of the problem of corruption, all of the group members promoted the video on their personal social networks, such as Facebook, Instagram, and Tik Tok. We used the required hashtags—#IACCTaylorsUniversity, #IIMS, #KIARTaylorsUniversity, #fightcorruption, #saynotobriber—to create a unified campaign and attract engagement. Screenshots of these posts were collected as proof of our digital outreach. The campaign was intended to make the viewers think about their personal decisions and spread the video among other people and believe in the main idea: that integrity begins with you. Say no to corruption.” Through social media, we managed to inform more people outside the classroom and encourage them to take active part in ensuring the spread of ethical conduct.
